In order to make dividing wall column (DWC) revamps more economical, Sulzer GTC offers an advanced thermal coupling option that produces the DWC effect in existing columns. Thermal coupling allows the optimization of energy consumption with minimum modifications. The energy savings in thermal coupling of existing columns is similar to that obtained in new DWC installations. Typical modifications required for converting a conventional two-column system to GTC-ATCS include partial tray replacement and interconnecting pipelines. The revamp can easily be done in a normal shutdown period of 15-20 days. GT-ATCS provides 20-30% energy reduction by:

  • Avoiding internal back mixing of streams in multi component distillation
  • Eliminating thermodynamic inefficiency and making full utilization of energy inputs
  • Redirecting liquid and vapor flows within the columns
